Writing my paper on pirates…

To term pirates ‘the common enemies of mankind’ was to set them outside the notion of humankind. In order to justify denying pirates their legal rights and to deny the challenge to the social order that the idea of piracy presented, official publications from the judiciary and the Church persistently characterized pirates as barbarians or animals. One sermon attacked pirates as ‘inhumane creatures’ and ‘barbarous rogues’ , while a judge called them ‘monsters’ and ‘ravenous Beasts of Prey.’ The workings of power in writing piracy in this way are stated by this judge himself: ‘the Laws of all Nations, that have setled into regular Governments, define and declare a Pirate to be an Enemy of Mankind. And therefore he can claim the Protection of no Prince, the privilege of no Country, the benefit of no Law; He is denied common humanity, and the very rights of Nature, with whom no Faith, Promise nor Oath is to be observed, nor is he to be otherwise dealt with, than a wild and savage Beast, which every Man may lawfully destroy.’ Though the sailors and pirates who had daily been subjected to inhumane treatment by their masters may have disagreed, it was those with social power who had the final word when they asserted that ‘Humane Society has been wrong’d by you, that you may not be suffered any longer to continue in it.’

Buying into the delusion of historian as hero, fighting the corner of the little man =P

Shouting into space

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Christmas fail! Just needed to scream that silently somehow. This is probably an abuse of tumblr.

Seeing it written down puts it in perspective. I suppose it doesn’t really rank among the worst Christmasses ever. The pets are alive. Nobody has cancer. No natural disasters appear to have occurred.

But it was pretty depressing! Family are crazy and emotionally screwed. Fair generalization?

Teenage style rant done.
